Event Details

The ‘EU Accession Migration: Taking stock and looking forward’ conference, hosted by the University of Birmingham in partnership with West Midlands Strategic Migration Partnership and Migrants Rights Network, aims at analysing the impacts of post-2004 EU migration on economy, public sector and broadly understood community cohesion in the West Midlands.

A group of eminent migration experts - prof. Anne Green (University of Warwick), Dr. Carlos Vargas-Silva (Migration Observatory/University of Oxford), Dr. Jenny Phillimore (University of Birmingham), Dr Michal Garapich (University of Roehampton) - will lead a series of evidence based workshops and discussions that will focus on both the challenges and opportunities linked with the recent economic migration.

Download the full programme.

Who should attend?

  • leaders and chief execs of local authorities from across the region,
  • representatives of other public sector agencies (e.g. NHS, education, community safety),
  • diplomatic representations of relevant member states
  • trade unions
  • voluntary/migrant organisations

Delegates representing public sector might be particularly interested to join discussions concentrating on anticipated effects of Romania and Bulgaria gaining full access to UK’s labour market in January 2014. The conference in general hopes to contribute in a significant way to a wider- regional and national- debate on economic migration and UK’s relationships with Europe.
